Course Reflection

Hello
I cannot believe that this semester went by really fast. I did not have any expectation for this course. I knew what i was getting into; taking an online class which is not so hard. Now that i have been through this course, i believe art is everything. Everyday thing that we do such as painting nails, and drawing scribbles when we are bored.

Honestly, i don't remember what i said art was in my initial posting and i cannot seem to find that specific blog but i really think that my way of seeing art has changed since then. I do not remember who i said was my favorite artist neither but as of right now, Frida Kahlo is my favorite artist. She was very open minded and brave in her days. Moreover, she was very talented and i admire her for that.

I am taking more online courses next semester. To me, online courses are very easy and time saving. I believe that my answer is the same as before.

It was nice taking this course with you; Professor Jamie Tabone. I will for sure put good words in ratemyprofessor😊

Art Gallery Visit 3

Hello Everyone
This is the last week before the exams. This week, we visited the art gallery again to look at portraits in order to create our own.
I chose two self portrait by Amrita Sher - Gil from Virtual Gallery: National Gallery of  Modern Art, Paris.
I visited Albright Knox Art Gallery but i could not find enough self portrait. The only self Portrait from Albright Knox that inspired me is Frida Kahlo.

Original Picture

The original picture is cropped because there are people in the back.
I selected these pieces because as a woman, I get inspired by other women who are very talented. Their posture points out their confident and that I like about women.
I used pencil to draw the portrait because it was easier than the other media.
While creating a self portrait, I kept drawing my face shape wrong and my eyes are not in the right place. To approve my portrait, I stopped myself from pressing on the paper hard. I drew the lines very light so it is easier for me to erase when I made the mistakes.
This piece represent me as I believe that I always have a natural look. Although I am smiling on my original picture, I was not able to draw a smile on my portrait.
I used the elements of lines and shapes on my self portrait.
I enjoyed working on this project because I was able to do something that i never thought I would. To be able to draw myself is a huge thing for me. It made me happy even though the result is not what I expected nor does it look like my original picture.
See you next week, Hopefully! 😃

Project 4 - Reflection

Hello everyone, This week, we did  Art Curation.
Honestly, i created my PowerPoint in a rush because i completely forgot about the due dates and i have 3 other things plus 2 tests due on the same day. Good luck to me!!

Well, it was not easy brainstorming the theme; it took me an hour. I finally came up with "Love" theme for the project which is great i thought because there are plenty of pictures which represents love. Nop. I had trouble finding the right paintings. The only hard part about this project was finding the artwork, other than that, i had fun looking at the artworks and describing them.

Module 13 Videos Reviews

Hello everyone
This week, we watched three videos.
The key concepts that I learned from watching “The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art” are that art historians refer to it as pop surrealism and practitioners call it Lowbrow. I also learnt that no one else knows how to categorize art.
The key concepts I learned from watching “Tate Modern” Is that Tate curators developed a new method utilizing theme-based museums. I also learnt that work of art was categorized and displayed white walls.
The key concept I learned from watching “An Acquiring Mind: Philippe de Montebello and the Metropolitan” is that Phillipe de Montebello served for 31 years as director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Lowbrow video doesn’t relate to my exhibition because all of my works of art chosen for the theme have a well-defined category. The Tate approach did relate to my exhibition because it the method and the idea of curator both utilize a theme-based approach. Phillip de Montebello and the Metropolitan related to my art project because de Montebello carefully chooses works of art like I did for my exhibit.
The films were very interesting and added much depth to my understanding of the museums. I have a better understanding of process placing artifacts in a museum.

Module 12 - Video Review

Hello Everyone
This week, I chose to watch “Hockney on Photography” and “Andy Warhol: Images of an Image” because I wanted to learn who they are as I have no idea who they are.
The key concept that I learned from watching “Hockney on Photography” is that Hockney uses the camera to create his works of art and uses photography images to create a collage of one single scenario
The key concepts I learned from watching “in Andy Warhol: Images of an Image” is that Warhol never wanted to be an artist, he wanted to be a tap dancer and that he worked in advertising before he became famous. The videos relate to the text because they both explain the concept of Hockney and what it is. It also does the same with Andy Warhol. The book and video both show examples of their art work along with the different ideas and concepts behind it. I enjoyed watching the films and found them to be extremely interesting. I thought it was interesting learning about Hockney and Andy Warhol. I had gotten a better understanding from watching the video.
See you next week😊

Art Gallery Visit 2

Hello everyone, this week we visited the art gallery again.

The title of the exhibit is We the People. The theme of We the People is the usage of art to feel what it means to be a citizen of the 21st century. The type of lighting used was bright. There were a lot of source of light coming from everywhere.
The colors used on the walls were a little dark than the color used on the artwork.
Some of the resources used in the inner building of the space include realistic metallic cookware and bright lighting
The movement of the viewer through the gallery space is open. The viewers are allowed to go freely, walk anywhere in the exhibition.
The artworks I believe were organized and neat. They were in one section.
The artworks are similar because each of them incorporates an element of how we are all connected to each other.
The artworks are different because they both have completely different settings. They also have different interpretations and meanings to them.
The artworks in these particular pieces are not framed because they are either on the floor or on the wall as a sculpture.
The artworks are identified and label the same as the rest of the artwork in the museum beside the one on the floor; I was not able to find the label.
The artwork is spaced far apart from each other.

Art 1

Art 1: Subodh Gupta's This is not a fountain, 2011–13, in We the People: New Art from the Collection. This artwork is fascinating in every way. Its key concept is to show how people are related to each other, in this case; through food and the objects used to cook the food. Gupta collected these pots and pans from his family in India in replacement for the new ones. it was amazing how he collected all of them to show the relation between them all using the right concept. It is not the “ideal” artwork you would normally see in a gallery. In this art, element of  value is used which shows the lightness and darkness.

Art 2

Art 2: Sopheap Pich (Cambodian, born 1971). Cycle, 2011. Bamboo, wire, and glue. This artwork truly is amazing. The artist used bamboo, rattan, burlap from rice bags to show connection between the mother nature and the people. The art was created to show the daily interaction between the landscape and the residents who lives around it. Sopheap Pich once had to flee the country due to the war but now he is back to his land.  The art interprets the ability to fight all the obstacle that come around. In this art, the principle of proportion and balance is used.

Art 3

Art 3: Hank Willis Thomas, We The People, 2015 decommissioned prison uniforms mounted on Sintra. There is not a lot of information on this piece but this art really is interesting.. The element of line is used in this art. When i was looking at this art, it did not look like an prison's uniform to me, i had to read the title of the artwork. It is made out of many uniform. This artwork is upsetting because it is pieces of clothes that many people once wore and to be looking at that is very disappointing. This artwork interpret the lost lives.

Visiting the gallery again was okay. I did not know what i was looking at in the beginning but as i started walking around, i figured it out. It was different looking at theme and architecture of the building because usually when i visit an art gallery, i only look at the artworks framed on the wall.

Module 11 - Video Review

This week, I watched the videos “Expressionism” and “Dada and Surrealism” because I wanted to learn different facts and concepts during this time period. I always wanted to understand how art was specifically tied into Expressionism and developed throughout this time about these time period and how art was incorporated and evolved during this time.
Also, from watching both of the films I want to learn how art was impacted during these two periods.
The key concept that I learned from watching Expressionism is that melancholy painted between 1892 and 93’ is another intense exploration of an inner state of mind which is a great example of art that arose during Expressionism and that it impacted many different art forms such as paintings, sculptures, film, and music
The key concepts learned from watching Dada and Surrealism is that the Dada Movement was born as a reaction to World War I and I also learned that Dada flourished primarily in Switzerland, New York City and Berlin in the 20th century
The videos related to the text by they both introduced the time periods and how art has evolved during these two time periods. The video and texts also helped to tie in what impacted these two periods and how that affected artists and their creations.
I enjoyed watching both of the films because I was able to choose what I wanted to learn more about.

Masks

Hello Everyone. This week, we did some research on different kinds of masks and we used that to create our own mask.

Mask #1

Mask #2

Mask #3

I selected these pieces because they are very unique looking masks to me. Mask #1, with the colorful texture expresses very human nature features. Its very colorful and contains different shapes that is why I decided to use this mask to create mine. I chose mask 2 because it is very simple and it also has different shapes and colors. This mask tells a story as half of the face is covered in gold with variety of colors while the other half is plain. It somehow implies that half the face is hidden for a reason. I chose mask 3 because of all the colors and the appearance of the mask.

I chose concepts from all three of the masks to inspire my final project.

Mask 1: Very humanistic mask with real life features, it comes across as a confused human features.  It is very unique and real. It shows a person who is confused with frightening expression on the mask.  I decided to choose this mask because it inspired me to use emotion and color in my mask.

Mask 2: There are not a lot of colors present but the colors chosen allows the mask facial features to stand out. This mask is used to show how the artist can tell story of a person wearing a mask without revealing whats hidden. You are still able to see past the colors and view the features. I used this mask because I wanted to create something simple that tells a story.

Mask 3: An extremely vibrant colored mask that shows creativity. It is something that looks closely to an colored sun with a very human like expressions.  I liked this mask because of the colors and there wasn't just one area to focus in on but, many.

My Mask

I used a cardboard to create my mask to emphasize the texture. I used a lot of color when creating this mask because I wanted to make it very simple yet colorful.
I also chose to use white color in the mouth to emphasize the person’s smile.  Moreover, I used pattern of shapes to make it mysterious as no one knows what’s behind those shape.

I thought the finished product of my mask turned out really cool. I didn't really know what to expect because we had no limitations. Reviewing different masks helped to put my own mask into perspective. It was exciting to create my mask.

Module 10 - Videos Review

Hello everyone

This week, I chose to watch “Islamic Art: India and the Middle East” and “Buddhism” because they; Islam and Buddhism are completely different religion yet, they both have consists of similar artworks.
From watching the video “Islamic Art: India and the Middle East”, I learned that Islam began on the Arabian Peninsula and that Muhammad 570 AD; 570 years after the birth of Jesus Christ.
From watching the video “Buddhism”, I learned that Buddhism is the religion of peace and harmony.
These two videos relate to the readings in the text as they both explain different religion and their ways of creating arts.
The videos were very fascinating as they added depth to my understanding of the religion Islam and Buddhism. Before watching the videos, I did not know that Buddha was born in India nor did I know that Islam started in Arabian Peninsula.

See You Next Time!!👋

Videos Reviews

Hello!
This week, I chose to watch “Leonardo da Vinci: The mind of the renaissance” and “The drawing of Michelangelo” because I am fascinated by their work of arts. I wanted to learn more about their lives and their artworks.
From the video “Leonardo da Vinci: The mind of the renaissance”, I learned that Leonardo’s mother was a servant girl and his father; a lawyer. I also learned that Leonardo was the first to make an actual landscape the main focus of the drawing.
From watching the video “The drawing of Michelangelo”, I learned that Michelangelo drew all his life but destroyed most of his own drawing because they showed his unwillingness.
These videos related to the readings in the text because they show different artists and their work of art.
I like the films because they were both interesting to watch. The videos added depth to my understanding of the reading and art concepts as they tell different stories of the two greatest artists of all time and how they came to be. Now I know little bit more about Leonardo and Michelangelo.

Dominant VS. Non - Dominant

Hello Everyone

This week, we had to draw our hand as a subject using the opposite hand which i find really interesting and a little tough because i had to focus on both of my hands; going back and forth to see the details.
I chose to use Pencils because it was easier to erase when I made mistakes.
Creating a drawing with a non-dominant hand was tough because I was not able to draw a straight line. I had to sketch first with a 2H pencil and sketch over it with a 4B.
I believe they are successful studies. I did not expect the results to be better than what was in my mind.
Yes, I would use my non-dominant hand to create artworks in the future. I have never thought about it  before but I just found out that I can actually write with my non - dominant hand. And maybe in few years, I will be able to draw with it nice too.

Course Reflection

Hello I cannot believe that this semester went by really fast. I did not have any expectation for this course. I knew what i was getting in...
